1. Coverage area and light levels

Coverage area is the most commonly misunderstood dimension in lighting purchases. Many buyers focus only on lumens — but lumens measure light output at the fixture. What arrives on the ground (measured in lux) depends on mounting height, beam angle, and whether the unit has a focusing reflector.

2. Battery vs mains power

Battery (wireless portable)

Best for: Sites with no mains power, rented pitches, school fields without electrical supply, events and festivals with multiple concurrent small-sided pitches

Core advantages: Any site, zero cable run; deploy multiple pitches simultaneously without running extension leads; not limited by the site's electrical infrastructure

Core limitations: Battery capacity limits continuous run time — typically 2–4 hours at full brightness, 6–8 hours at reduced output; longer events require advance power planning or spare batteries; slightly higher long-term operating cost than mains

What to check when buying: Focus on the full-brightness run time — the headline "up to X hours" figure usually represents the lowest output setting. Prioritise units with adjustable brightness so you can run lower output during warm-up to preserve battery and switch to full brightness for match play.

Mains power (plugged in)

Best for: Fixed venues with electrical infrastructure — schools with power supply, permanent training grounds, long-run camps and league home venues

Core advantages: No energy-capacity limit; lowest long-term operating cost; typically higher wattage available for covering large pitches efficiently

Core limitations: Requires a usable socket or distribution board within practical cabling distance of every unit position; moving between sites means re-cabling, which adds setup time

One-sentence rule: Site has a reliable socket → mains. Site has no power, or you move with your sessions → battery.

3. IP weather protection rating

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings use two digits: the first covers solids and dust, the second covers water — the second digit is what matters for field lighting.

For outdoor sports: IP65 minimum, no exceptions.

An IP44 unit won't be immediately destroyed by a shower, but repeated wetting degrades the seals over time, creating electrical hazard and shortening the product's life. IP65 is the rating where the system is fully safe and functional in heavy rain during a normal training session. The small price premium over IP44 is typically recouped within two rainy seasons versus replacing a degraded unit.

4. Setup time and no fixed infrastructure

The headline advantage of portable field lighting is no fixed infrastructure required — no planning permission for permanent masts, no concrete foundations, no permanent modification of the site. But "portable" varies considerably between products:
